ZX Spectrum +2A, +2B, +3 systems have sold in over 5 million units worldwide, an impressive number even by today's standards. However, unlike modern computers, tablets, and smartphones, a considerable number of ZX Spectrum systems are still operational over 30 years after being introduced to the public. In proper hands they have a chance of surviving another 30 years. Yet a common failure among ZX Spectrum systems is the power supply. This is specifically why we have designed a replacement ZX Spectrum PSU. This series of power supplies gives your system a fresh start, minimizing the risk of damage due to an ageing factory power supply.
The RetroPower PSU series has been introduced to the market as a successor of our Modern and Classic power supply styles. RetroPower PSUs feature a solid gray/black enclosure, with a universal power cable connector and on/off switch. The basic version has a semi-translucent top window with LED illumination, while the OLED version features a digital OLED display with 3 touch buttons to navigate through the options.
The ZX Spectrum PSU was designed from scratch as a high-quality replacement for the original ZX Spectrum power supply. It contains internal +5V/4.0A, +12V/2.0A, and -12V/0.5A DC switching power modules. The power supply has a sturdy custom-made case with an OLED digital display monitoring the output voltage and uptime.
The OLED digital series has a display showing the output voltage of the power supply, the uptime, and the total time of operation (stored in internal non-volatile memory). This allows to quickly monitor the basic state of the power supply. Touching the sensor below the display will toggle the currently displayed screen.
The RetroPower PSU series features a universal DIN7/DIN8 output power connector, shared between the entire series. A device-specific connection cable is included with the power supply. The pinout diagram is made available for testing purposes.
Each RetroPower PSU comes with a power cable, fitting the DIN7/DIN8 output power connector. This is a high-quality and durable cable, with thick leads. Output cables for the RetroPower PSU series may be purchased separately. The exchangeable output power cable also allows to use a single power supply for a variety of systems (under condition, that the output voltages match). For example, the RetroPower PSU C128 can be used with the original C128 cable, or an additional C64 or Plus/4 cable to power all three types of systems. Similarly, the RetroPower PSU C64 FDD Dual can be used with a variety of output cables to power different systems from the C64 family. Amiga 500, Amiga CD32, and ZX Spectum can also be interchanged thanks to matching voltages. Please contact us if in doubt regarding power cable compatibility.
The development of our series of Commodore, Amiga, Sinclair, Atari, Coleco, and TI power supplies has been driven by a sense of sentiment for retro-computing, combined with accuracy and dedication in creating electrical equipment to be proud of. It goes without saying, that the electronics has been designed by skilled professionals, thoroughly tested, and improved based on years of feedback from thousands of users. However, we have also put a lot of effort into the visual appearance of our power supplies. We design and manufacture our own enclosures with CNC and injection molding technologies. The LED and OLED panels are carved from PMMA to give a modern appearance to the power supplies. Hundreds of hours of designing and perfecting have been put into these devices, to create not only a safe and robust power supply, but also a satisfying visual improvement to your system.
The original ZX Spectrum power supplies are very hard to get by these days, and often pose a reliability or even safety threat. As for other replacement power supplies, a handful of solutions exist on the market. Yet most of them are DIY-grade, lacking basic quality, electric engineering expertise, and safety features. The vast majority of these power supplies is recognizable by general-purpose plastic enclosures and internal components wired up in a true DIY style. Opening up a few of those power supplies was big motivation for us to design our Commodore C64, C128, Amiga, Atari, ZX Spectrum, Sinclair QL, TI-99/4A, and ColecoVision power supply series.
Our ZX Spectrum PSU is designed to be safe for the user, and safe for the computer. It's protected from over-current and over-voltage, and fused on both the AC and DC sides. Nevertheless, it's mandatory to say that this is a 120/230V AC power device, which should not be opened, tampered with, or used for anything else than powering an unmodified ZX Spectrum computer. It's intended for indoor usage only, the maximum rated current should not be exceeded, and proper ventilation should be ensured. Do not open or tamper with, at the risk or electrical shock and loss of warranty.
