A fresh start

Commodore 64 and 128 systems have sold in over 20 million units worldwide, and the Amiga 500 series has sold in over 7 million units worldwide, which are impressive numbers even by today's standards. However, unlike modern computers, tablets, and smartphones, a considerable number of Commodore, Amiga, Atari, Sinclair, TI-99/4A, and Coleco systems are still operational over 30 years after being introduced to the public. In proper hands they have a chance of surviving another 30 years. Yet a common failure among all Commodore 64/128/Plus/4, Amiga 500, Atari XL/XE, Atari 520ST/260ST, ZX Spectrum, Sinclair QL, TI-99/4A, and ColecoVision systems is the power supply. This is specifically why we have designed our series of replacement PSUs. This series of power supplies gives your system a fresh start, minimizing the risk of damage due to an ageing factory power supply.

Robust and reliable design

The C64, C128, Plus/4 Amiga, Atari, ZX Spectrum, Sinclair QL, TI-99/4A, and ColecoVision PSU was designed from scratch as a high-quality replacement for the original power supply. The Commodore version contains a +5V/2.0A DC (C64) or +5V/3.0A DC (C128) switching power module with an anti-ripple filter, along with a true transformer-based 9V/1.1A AC module. The Amiga, Atari 520ST, and ZX Spectrum versions contain +5V/4.0A, +12V/2.0A, and -12V/0.5A DC switching power modules. The Sinclair QL features a +9V/2.2A DC power module along with a 15.6V/0.25A AC transformer. The TI-99/4A and ColecoVision power supplies contain +5V/4.0A, +12V/2.0A, and -5V/0.5A DC switching power modules. And finally the Atari XL/XE series power supply has a high-performance +5V/2.0A DC switching power module. Each power supply has a sturdy custom-made case with an elegant front screen containing an OLED digital display, or LED-illuminated logo.

RetroPower PSU vs. Modern

RetroPower PSU is the successor of our Modern and Classic power supply series. The RetroPower PSU enclosure is composed of several layers, with a mixture of dark gray, light gray, and black. In the OLED variation it features three touch pads instead of one. The Modern and Classic series are single color, with a choice of gray and black. From the functionality, RetroPower PSU and the Modern/Classic series don't differ all that much. However, RetroPower PSU is the branch of products that will be further developed in the future.

OLED Digital vs. LED

Our power supplies are available in the OLED digital and LED variations. The OLED digital series has a display showing the output voltage of the power supply, the uptime, and the total time of operation (stored in internal non-volatile memory). This allows to quickly monitor the basic state of the power supply. Touching the sensor below the display will toggle the currently displayed screen. The LED version has a static PMMA display, and in the Modern/Classic series comes with an illuminated logo engraved. A small potentiometer is available below the display for adjusting the brightness.

Black vs. Gray case

The Modern and Classic series of power supplies is available in black and light gray. The performance between both types doesn't differ, it's a matter of taste. The LED illuminator is generally black with white LEDs, being more pronounced on the gray edition and giving an interesting color combination. On the other hand the LED illuminator blends in the black version better, being barely visible when not powered.

Classic vs. Modern case

The C64 and C128 power supplies are available in two shapes. The first is called Classic and with a size of 86 mm x 70 mm x 48 mm (3.4" x 2.8" x 1.9") resembles the original power supply series. The second is called Modern, and resembles a modern power supply with a slicker shape of 125 mm x 59 mm x 42 mm (5.0" x 2.3" x 1.6"). Both variants however are a lot lighter and more compact than the original Commodore power supplies. Additionally, both the Modern and Classic case are available in colors black and gray. The C64 FDD Dual, Amiga, Atari, ZX Spectrum, Sinclair QL, TI-99/4A, and ColecoVision versions are available only in the Modern 125 mm x 59 mm x 42 mm (5.0" x 2.3" x 1.6") case, but also as black and gray.

What else is out there?

The original Commodore power supplies are very hard to get by these days, and often pose a reliability or even safety threat. As for other replacement power supplies, a handful of solutions exist on the market. Yet most of them are DIY-grade, lacking basic quality, electric engineering expertise, and safety features. The vast majority of these power supplies is recognizable by general-purpose plastic enclosures and internal components wired up in a true DIY style. Opening up a few of those power supplies was big motivation for us to design our Commodore C64, C128, Amiga, Atari, ZX Spectrum, Sinclair QL, TI-99/4A, and ColecoVision power supply series.

Safety first

Our C64, C128, Amiga, Atari, ZX Spectrum, Sinclair QL, TI-99/4A, and ColecoVision power supply series is designed to be safe for the user, and safe for the computer. It's protected from over-current and over-voltage, and fused on both the AC and DC sides. Nevertheless, it's mandatory to say that this is a 120/230V AC power device, which should not be opened, tampered with, or used for anything else than powering an unmodified computer. It's intended for indoor usage only, the maximum rated current should not be exceeded, and proper ventilation should be ensured.

Power supply testers - the perfect match

Our power supplies are a perfect match for our C64, C128, Amiga, Atari, ZX Spectrum, Sinclair QL, TI-99/4A, and ColecoVision power supply tester series. These power testers perform automated tests including voltage, current, and ripple for the 5V, and 9V or +/-12V PSU outputs (depending on version). Both series are designed to be mutually complementary.
